September is Read Your Own Books Month

So I know I fell off the bandwagon a little bit – I have lots of things to review for you, I just haven’t written the reviews yet. But I will as soon as I can, I promise. Anyways, I saw this idea on another blog and so I will be attempting to read my own books in September – books that are part of my collection but I haven’t read yet.

I thought five was a pretty reasonable number, so here are the five I picked.

1. I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi

2. No Plot? No Problem! by Chris Baty

3. The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian

4. Sunset Wishes by Cherie Bennett

5. Stamp Twice for Murder by Betty Cavanna

So those are my books – eclectic at best, but these are some I have been wanting to read for awhile (hopefully I will be able to make some progress).

The DMZ Review

Name of book: The DMZ

Author: Jeanette Windle

Reviewer: Melissa

Summary (from Jeanette’s website): More than a decade after the end of the cold war has chilled the Marxist rebel movements around the world, one hot spot remains-Colombia.
The inexplicable loss of three major U.S. assets draws the attention of the world to the Colombian demilitarized zone. Are the local Colombian rebels responsible? Or is a deadly Middle Eastern secret cloaked by the jungle canopy of the DMZ.
Among the contingent of politicians and media headed for the DMZ is reporter Julie Baker, whose parents had been missionaries in Colombia. Old hurts and terrors resurge as she revisits the place of her birth—and her parents’ deaths. When Julie’s own abduction by guerrillas triggers a time bomb that has been ticking under the feet of the U. S. for a decade, she is left with more questions than answers.
With the fate of two countries resting in her hands, Julie must put aside her own terror to face just what God’s call to sacrifice will mean for her past and her increasingly uncertain future.

Rating: 4

Reason for rating: I really loved the plot and premise of this book. Studying political science and being throughly interested in these kind of things and so that made the plot very enjoyable. That being said, it was a bit dense at points and I have reread a couple of paragraphs to make sure that I understood what was going on. But, you will come out of the book feeling like you’ve been there, like you’ve experienced it and that’s definitely a plus. Also, I can appreciate how much research she had to do and just how brilliantly she wove things all together. Seriously awesome in that aspect. Except the title always makes me think I’m going to read about Korea, but it’s about Columbia. Not even the same continent.

Rating: 5

Reason for rating: Oh my goodness – my husband and I loved this book. Picture this – we read, separate some nights, but mostly together usually almost every night. We started this one and it was a dangerous book for us to read together out loud. Why? Because we wouldn’t want to stop! One night we read out loud for like 3 hours before we were like we finally need to go to bed (and that was a school night). It is such a hook and such a page turning – intriguing and suspenseful at every turn. As soon as my spring break started, we took that first day and took turns reading out loud until we finished it. It was all we did that day. Simply amazing! The only critique we have of it is that the ending felt a little deus ex machina (pulling out my high school lit terms) or in other words that it was a bit too neat. Great overall though and I highly, highly recommend it.

Mountains Bow Down

Name of book: The Mountains Bow Down

Author: Sibella Giorello

Reviewer: Melissa

Summary: Everything’s going to work out. Time away always makes things better . . ..

That’s what FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon believes as she boards a cruise to Alaska . A land of mountains and gems and minerals, The Last Frontier is a dream destination for this forensic geologist who’s hoping to leave behind a hectic work schedule and an engagement drained of romance.

But when a passenger goes missing and winds up dead, Raleigh ‘s vacation suddenly gets lost at sea. The ship’s security chief tries to rule the death a suicide, but Raleigh ‘s forensics background points to a much darker conclusion: Somewhere onboard, a ruthless murderer walks free.

Engulfed by one of her toughest cases yet, Raleigh requests assistance from the FBI and receives her nemesis-perpetual ladies man Special Agent Jack Stephanson. As the cruise ship sails through the Inside Passage, Raleigh has five days to solve a high-profile murder, provide consultation for a movie filming onboard, and figure out her increasingly complicated feelings for Jack-who might not be such a jerk after all.

And that’s only her work life. Family offers even more challenges. Joined on the cruise by her mother and aunt, Raleigh watches helplessly as disturbing rifts splinter her family.

Like the scenery that surrounds the cruise ship, Raleigh discovers a situation so steep and so complex that even the mountains might bow down.

Rating: 3

Reason for rating: It was an okay book. I had a hard time getting into it, but once I was more than a few chapters in, Raleigh and the other characters really started to grow on me. I especially like the interesting dynamics of the relationship between Raleigh and her mom. It was one of the things that kept me reading. The humor was a nice touch as well.

Money and Marriage! Book Review

Name of book: Money and Marriage

Author: Matt Bell

Reviewer: Melissa

Summary: Money & Marriage: A Complete Guide for Engaged or Newly Married Couples

In this thorough and practical guide, financial expert Matt Bell helps engaged and newly married couples navigate the merger of habits, flaws, and attitudes about money so two can truly become one.

His writing is full of helpful advice, Scripture, and practical steps to gaining financial freedom together as a couple. Learn to use money in a way that minimizes disputes and maximizes marital happiness.

Rating: 2

Reason for rating: It was an okay book. I just wasn’t thrilled about it. My husband and I (we just got married late December) just sort of felt like a lot of it was aimed at couples getting married who were older than us and not necessarily younger newlyweds (we’re both 20). We also felt like a lot of the information was stuff we knew already, so we didn’t gain very much from reading it. There was a lot of good information in it, just not a lot of things that we felt benefited us.

He is the author of two books: “Money, Purpose, Joy” (September 2008) and “Money Strategies for Tough Times” (April 2009), both by NavPress. Matt holds a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from DePaul University , where he wrote a thesis about the emergence of America ‘s consumer culture and its influence on people’s beliefs and behaviors.

Matt lives with his wife and their three young children in the Chicago area. Visit his website and blog at http://www.mattaboutmoney.com.

Matt Bell’s (a.k.a Matt About Money) Money & Marriage has just released (NAVPress) and is a great resource for engaged or newly married couples.
Matt says about the book, “I wrote “Money & Marriage” because I believe in marriage. I’m sure it isn’t news to you that money is a very common source of stress between spouses. It’s even a primary factor in many divorces. I wrote this book with no less of a goal than to save many marriages from disaster, and to help all couples use money in a way that strengthens their relationship and increases their joy.”

To celebrate Matt has put together a Nest Egg Giveaway with a prize package worth over $250!

One winner will receive:
